Motorcycle and scooter dealers in India were expecting a better new year since the world's largest two-wheeler market has yet to fully recover from the 2020 lockout and rising expenses. However, 2021 has shown to be much worse. Panicked store owners are asking for assistance. Showroom traffic fell as governments implemented stringent controls to contain a deadly second wave of Covid-19. Approximately 60% of India's 26,500 auto dealerships offer two-wheelers, with rural India being their largest market. With the virus already devouring the hinterland, a speedy return is out of the question when shops have an average inventory of a month and a half. Job losses and shutdowns are on the horizon.
